To celebrate its 20th anniversary, TERATEC published Les Clés du Numérique, a white paper bringing together more than fifty experts from academia, research and industry to discuss the future of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and quantum technologies.
Among these contributions is "Hybrid AI for Connected, Sustainable and Resilient Cities and Territories", authored by Francisco Chinesta, Dominique Baillargeat and Victor Champaney. The chapter explores how hybrid AI can bridge the gap between traditional physics-based simulation and purely data-driven artificial intelligence.
The publication explains that while numerical simulations provide scientific accuracy, they often remain too computationally intensive for operational applications. Conversely, purely statistical AI models may struggle to extrapolate beyond the data used for training. Hybrid AI combines these two worlds by embedding physical knowledge into machine learning models, enabling faster predictions while maintaining strong physical consistency.
Drawing on research from the DesCartes Program, the article presents hybrid digital twins as a key technology for applications such as urban climate modelling, environmental monitoring, infrastructure management and industrial optimization.
